  A Happy Halloween at Skinner










Skinner School had the Halloween spirit last week.  Our students enjoyed dressing in costume, participating in the school Halloween parade and celebrating with their class. The school looked great decorated for the holidays.  Thank you to all parents who donated their time to help our teachers and staff with celebrations.

PTO's Spooky Skinner Ball a Success
 




       
The Spooky Skinner Ball was held after school at Skinner on Friday, October 26th.  This event was a big success - students in grades K-6 enjoyed every minute!  Thank you to the PTO for organzing this event and to all the 8th graders and Skinner parents who volunteered their time to help the event run smoothly.

  Get Involved - Join the PTO 
Get Involved with PTO! Joining the PTO is a great way to get involved with Skinner West. The PTO meets once a month to plan community-building events, run fundraising programs, and help fulfill school and teacher needs. You can get involved by attending PTO meetings, joining a planning committee, volunteering for an event, or becoming a PTO officer. Officer elections our coming up at the next meeting on Nov. 27 at 6 pm in the library. You can donate to the PTO any time here.

There are several days of no attendance for students in November. 
No School for students on Friday, November 2nd for a School Improvement Day.
No School on Monday, November 12th for Veterans Day. 
No School for students on Wednesday, November 14th for Elementary Parent Teacher Conferences and Report Card Pick-Up.
No School on Wednesday, November 21st, Thursday, November 22nd, and Friday, November 23rd for the Thanksgiving Break.

  Congratulations Mrs. DeJulio - Nationally Certified!
                               
We would like to congratulate Mrs. DeJulio (Lohman) on the successful renewal of her National Boards Certification. NBC is a rigorous, standards-based process and is considered to be the most respected professional certification available in K-12 education. Just under 3% of all teachers are certified nationwide. Way to go Mrs. DeJulio!

  Snippets Haircut Fundraiser Extended to Nov. 5th

Through Nov. 5, Snippets Mini Cuts will donate $5 to Skinner West for every kid's haircut when you present this flyer. This is a great opportunity to keep your kids looking sharp while supporting our school!

budget 
  Budget Update 
Based on current enrollment, Skinner West received additional budget funding from CPS.  The LSC members voted and approved the additional budget items during last week's LSC meeting.  Here are some highlights that include some, but not all, of the allocated additional budget:
-Funding for areas that were deferred from May's 2018/19 budget meeting, including
- Instructional support for areas such as Achieve3000, IXL, and textbooks
- Operational support to fund a teaching assistant
- Professional development for teachers
- Indoor Recess Support
- Safety Support
- Student Council & Debate team  
 
We are grateful for the additional funding and thank our LSC for approving the much needed budget items. Interested in learning more?  Come to an upcoming LSC meeting.  Our next meeting is Tuesday, 11/27 at 6pm in the gymnasium

  Don't Put Your Eggs in One Basket
Skinner West will once again offer a sibling lottery.  The application process for the 2018-2019 school year for selective enrollment & sibling lottery closes on December 14th.  Neighborhood parents are encouraged to apply for the Classical Program.   Classroom Connections: Ms. Growe and Mrs. Priola
Mrs. Priola and Ms. Growe lead their kindergarten classrooms in a hands-on pumpkin investigation. The two classrooms worked together to weigh, measure, and count over 100 pumpkin seeds. The students had fun learning about non-standard and standard forms of measurement, and enjoyed getting their hands gooey in this interactive math/science lesson.
 

Health 
  CPS Health Requirements
Make sure that your child is healthy and ready to learn by the start of the school year! Check in with your school and medical provider to find out what immunizations and health exams are required for school. Proof of required immunizations, physical exams and vision exams were due October 15, 2018.  More information about the requirements can be found here
